Operating cost calculator

Aircraft operating cost calculator

What it costs to fly and own a helicopter, piston airplane, turboprop, private jet or regional airliner: hourly and annual operating costs for every model, line by line, with sources.

132 aircraft · Jet A $7.66 and 100LL $7.41 a gallon · CRAFT estimates

Calculator

What an aircraft costs a year, and per hour

Choose an aircraft, the hours you fly and the fuel price you pay. The answer is an estimate for a U.S.-based aircraft, with every line behind it on the model's page.

Method

How every estimate is built

The same formula for every aircraft: fixed costs a year (crew, training, hangar, insurance, management, inspections) plus a cost per flight hour (fuel, maintenance, engine and parts reserves, fees). Annual cost is fixed costs plus the hourly cost times the hours flown; the hourly figure we quote spreads the fixed costs over 200 hours.

  • Fuel: each model's published fuel burn, times one price for every aircraft that burns that fuel: Jet A at $7.66 a gallon and 100LL avgas at $7.41, the U.S. average FBO prices in our fuel price data. A model without a published fuel burn gets no estimate.
  • Crew: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics pay plus employer benefits. Piston airplanes, piston helicopters and the owner-flown turboprop singles assume the owner flies: the crew line is $0 and every page has a switch to add a hired pilot.
  • Hangar and insurance: published airport hangar schedules, and an aviation insurance broker's published premiums and hull rates, applied to each model's published price where there is one.
  • Maintenance and reserves: engine reserves from the maker's time between overhauls and a published overhaul price where one exists; otherwise, and for maintenance, a stated range for the class, midpoint used and shown on every page.
  • Not included: the purchase price, financing, depreciation, taxes, upgrades, and any rental or charter income.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to operate an aircraft?

It depends mostly on the type and on how many hours it flies. In our estimates at 200 hours a year, the median piston airplane costs about $300 a flight hour, helicopter $2,890, turboprop $2,590, private jet $7,750, with the fixed costs spread over the hours. Flying fewer hours raises the hourly figure, because hangar, insurance and crew cost the same either way.

How much does a helicopter cost per hour to operate?

From about $320 an hour for the Robinson R22 Beta II to $10,630 for the Airbus H225, at 200 hours a year in our estimates. Piston helicopters are usually owner-flown; turbine and twin-engine helicopters carry paid pilots, larger reserves for rotor and drive-train parts, and higher insurance.

How much does a small plane cost per hour?

A piston airplane costs about $220 to $690 a flight hour in our estimates (200 hours a year, owner-flown), median $300. Fuel, the engine overhaul reserve, hangar and insurance are most of it.

How does the aircraft cost calculator work?

Pick an aircraft, set the hours you expect to fly and the fuel price you pay. It adds the model's fixed costs a year to its hourly cost (fuel at your price plus maintenance, reserves and fees) times your hours, and divides by the hours for a cost per flight hour. For owner-flown types it can add a hired pilot. Every line behind the numbers is on the model's page with its source.

Why are these numbers different from other aircraft cost calculators?

Each one makes different assumptions about crew, hangar, insurance and reserves, and many don't say what they are. Ours are stated line by line on every model's page, with the source for each input and the range behind every estimate, so you can change what doesn't fit your situation.
