Per flight hour

Jet fuel cost per flight hour, by jet size

Gallons an hour (the median burn of the models in our ownership-cost data) times today's price a gallon. The FBO column is what an owner or operator pays at the pump, by our estimate; the spot column is the fuel alone, before delivery, tax and margin.

Estimates: burn is an average across a flight, and FBO prices vary by airport. For a model, hours and your own price, use the fuel burn and fuel cost calculator, which starts from today's price. Jet A weighs about 6.7 lb a gallon (FAA).

What the numbers mean

Spot, airline and FBO: three prices for one gallon

The same Jet A is priced three ways depending on who buys it and where.

$4.40

Wholesale spot

Bulk jet fuel changing hands on the U.S. Gulf Coast, before tax and delivery (free on board). The market benchmark: EIA, Sep 29, 2026.

$3.41

What airlines pay

U.S. airlines' average cost per gallon on domestic flying, from their filings: contract volume prices with tax and delivery, sometimes hedged. BTS, July 2026.

$7.66

At the FBO

What a private jet pays at an airport's private terminal: delivery, taxes, airport fees and the FBO's margin on top, about $3.26 over spot. Posted prices ranged $3.65 to $14.00 in AirNav's Oct 4, 2026 report.

For comparison, Gulf Coast regular gasoline averaged $2.72 a gallon at wholesale over the last 250 trading days (EIA).

Fuel in the hourly rate

How jet card pricing handles fuel

A jet card or charter rate per hour covers fuel one of two ways, and it's worth asking which before you compare rates.

Fuel in the rate, within a band

The hourly rate includes fuel as long as the fuel price stays inside a published index band; the rate is adjusted only if fuel moves outside it.

A surcharge on top

The program publishes a base rate and adds a fuel surcharge or adjustment per hour that moves with fuel prices, often reset monthly. Ask what it is today and how it's set.

CRAFT's Fleet Jet Card

$12,950 an hour on the 25-hour card, fuel and FET included: fuel within the published index band and the 7.5% federal excise tax on domestic legs. A fuel surcharge applies only if fuel runs well above the band.

Fleet Jet Card rates and terms →

The arithmetic behind a surcharge: a Bombardier Challenger 350 burns about 330 gallons an hour, so every $1 a gallon is about $330 an hour, or $8,250 over 25 hours. At today's estimated FBO price its fuel alone is about $2,528 an hour. More on reading a card's terms: the true cost of a jet card.

Jet fuel prices: questions

What is the price of jet fuel today?

Wholesale, $4.40 a gallon on September 29, 2026: the U.S. Gulf Coast kerosene-type jet fuel spot price published by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), up 1.0% on the week and up 111.1% on the year. At an airport FBO, where private jets buy Jet A, the price is higher: airNav's nationwide average Jet A price at U.S. FBOs was $7.66 a gallon on October 4, 2026 across 2,596 FBOs.

How much is a gallon of Jet A at an FBO?

AirNav's nationwide average Jet A price at U.S. FBOs was $7.66 a gallon on October 4, 2026, across 2,596 FBOs, with posted prices from $3.65 to $14.00. Each FBO sets its own price, so it varies by airport, and operators who buy often pay contract prices below the posted one.

Why does jet fuel cost more at the FBO than the spot price?

The spot price is for bulk fuel changing hands on the Gulf Coast before tax (free on board). The FBO price adds pipeline and truck delivery, federal and state fuel taxes, airport fees, storage, into-plane service and the FBO's margin. On October 4, 2026 the gap was $3.26 a gallon: $7.66 at the FBO (AirNav) against $4.40 spot on Sep 29, 2026 (EIA).

Is jet fuel cheaper than gasoline?

Not at wholesale right now. On September 29, 2026 Gulf Coast jet fuel was $4.40 a gallon and Gulf Coast regular gasoline $3.63 (both EIA spot prices). Over the last 12 months jet fuel averaged $3.06 and gasoline $2.72. At an FBO, Jet A carries delivery, taxes and margin on top, about $7.66 a gallon by our estimate.

Are jet fuel prices going up or down?

Over the last week the spot price is up 1.0%, over the last month up 15.6% and over the last year up 111.1%. In the past 52 weeks it ranged from $1.82 (Jan 7, 2026) to $4.71 (Sep 15, 2026). We report the market as published; we don't forecast it.

How much does 1,000 gallons of jet fuel cost?

About $4,399 at the latest spot price ($4.399 a gallon, Sep 29, 2026), and about $7,660 at an FBO at our estimated average of $7.66. 1,000 gallons of Jet A weighs about 6,700 lb.

How much is jet fuel per ton or per barrel?

At $4.399 a gallon (spot, Sep 29, 2026): about $185 a barrel of 42 gallons, and about $1,447 a metric ton, which is about 329 U.S. gallons at 6.7 lb a gallon.

How much does it cost to fuel a private jet per hour?

At our estimated FBO price of $7.66 a gallon, from about $613 an hour for a turboprop (80 gallons an hour) to about $3,210 for an ultra-long-range jet (419 gallons). Every dollar a gallon adds that many dollars an hour.

Is fuel included in a jet card rate?

It depends on the program, so ask. Some quote a base rate and add a fuel surcharge or adjustment that moves with prices; others build fuel into the rate. CRAFT's Fleet Jet Card rate is $12,950 an hour on the 25-hour card, fuel and FET included: fuel within the published index band, with a fuel surcharge only if fuel runs well above the band.

What do airlines pay for jet fuel?

U.S. airlines paid $3.41 a gallon on average for domestic flying in July 2026 (preliminary), according to the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics, which collects it from airline filings. That is a bulk contract price including taxes and delivery, and hedging can move it; it sits between the spot price ($3.40 averaged that month) and what a private jet pays at an FBO.

What does avgas (100LL) cost?

AirNav's nationwide average 100LL avgas price at U.S. FBOs was $7.41 a gallon on October 4, 2026, across 3,480 FBOs, with posted prices from $4.43 to $15.42. Avgas is leaded gasoline for piston-engine aircraft; jets and turboprops burn Jet A, a kerosene. EIA's own avgas price series ended in 2022.

  • Schedule. We check every source every four hours and store any new or revised prices; this page and the tools update within minutes of a new release. EIA publishes the daily spot prices once a week (spot prices table), so the newest price is usually 1 to 9 days old. If a check fails, the last good data stays up; a note appears only when a price is older than its source's normal lag (14 days for EIA).
  • FBO price. FBO price lists are not ours to republish, so the retail figure is the nationwide average Jet A price at U.S. FBOs from AirNav's report, read by hand and dated. Between readings we move it by the change in the spot price since its date ($4.399 on Sep 29, 2026), on the basis that an FBO's markup is mostly a per-gallon amount.
  • Fuel burn. Average gallons per flight hour by model from our ownership-cost pages; a jet size uses the median of the models we cover in it.
