Average burn across a flight: more in the climb, less in cruise at altitude. Every model with a published fuel burn is in the calculator.

Method

How we calculate

  1. Gallons. The aircraft's average fuel burn per flight hour, from the specifications on our ownership-cost pages, times the hours. A jet size uses the median of the models we cover in it.
  2. Weight. Gallons times 6.7 lb (FAA), and times 0.4536 for kilograms.
  3. Cost. Gallons times the price per gallon. The default is today's estimated U.S. average FBO price: AirNav's nationwide average Jet A price on October 4, 2026, across 2,596 FBOs, moved by the change in EIA's Gulf Coast spot price since. Type your own to match an airport or a contract price.

Private jet fuel: questions

How much fuel does a private jet burn per hour?

By size, at the median of the models we cover: a turboprop about 80 gallons, a very light jet about 90 gallons, a light jet about 181 gallons, a midsize jet about 242 gallons, a super-midsize jet about 263 gallons, a large jet about 286 gallons, an ultra-long-range jet about 419 gallons. A Challenger 350 averages 330 gallons (2,211 lb) an hour.

How much does it cost to fuel a private jet?

At $7.66 a gallon (our estimated u.s. average fbo price for jet a, October 4, 2026), about $1,386 an hour for a light jet, $2,015 for a super-midsize and $3,210 for an ultra-long-range jet. Filling a tank is the burn rate times hours of fuel carried, and FBO prices swing by several dollars a gallon from one airport to the next.

How much does a gallon of Jet A weigh?

About 6.7 pounds (3.04 kg). The FAA's Weight and Balance Handbook gives 6.68 lb a U.S. gallon at 59 °F and 6.75 lb at 32 °F: fuel gets denser as it cools. Pilots plan fuel in pounds because weight, not volume, decides performance.

Why do fuel prices differ so much between airports?

Each FBO sets its own posted price, which carries delivery costs, airport fees and its margin. AirNav's October 4, 2026 report ranged from $3.65 to $14.00 a gallon for Jet A across 2,596 FBOs. Operators flying regularly buy on fuel contracts well under the posted price, which is why the price here is editable.

Is fuel included in a charter or jet card price?

In a charter quote, yes: the hourly price covers fuel along with crew and maintenance, though some programs add a fuel surcharge when prices rise. CRAFT's Fleet Jet Card rate is $12,950 an hour on the 25-hour card, fuel and FET included (fuel within a published index band). This calculator is for owners, budgets and curiosity: the fuel cost alone.
