Los Angeles for private flyers: airports, seasons and events

Los Angeles has several business-aviation airports spread across the basin, so you can land close to the Westside, the Valley, Orange County or Long Beach instead of routing through LAX. Each airport has its own noise rules, and some limit late-night jet departures, so the airport choice often depends on the time of day as much as the address.

Private jet airports near Los Angeles

  • VNY

    Van Nuys Airport

Runway 8,001 ft · control tower · no airline service · U.S. Customs (user-fee airport) · 18 mi from downtown, straight line

Suits: By runway length: every jet size, large-cabin included.

Van Nuys is a general aviation airport run by Los Angeles World Airports, with no airline service and four major FBOs. A city noise and curfew ordinance limits louder departures from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.; quieter Stage 3 jets are not affected until 11 p.m., and landings are not restricted.Sources: iflyvny.com, iflyvny.com

  • LAX

    Los Angeles International Airport

Runway 12,923 ft · control tower · U.S. Customs by prior arrangement · 12 mi from downtown, straight line

Suits: By runway length: every jet size, large-cabin included.

  • BUR

    Hollywood Burbank/Bob Hope Airport

Runway 6,886 ft · control tower · 12 mi from downtown, straight line

Suits: By runway length: light to super-midsize jets; large-cabin jets depending on weight and weather.

Hollywood Burbank is close to the studios. Its voluntary 10 p.m. to 6:59 a.m. curfew covers scheduled airlines, not private flights.Source: hollywoodburbankairport.com

  • SNA

John Wayne Orange County International Airport

Runway 5,700 ft · control tower · U.S. Customs (user-fee airport) · 34 mi from downtown, straight line

Suits: By runway length: light to super-midsize jets; large-cabin jets depending on weight and weather.

John Wayne serves Orange County. Its mandatory General Aviation Noise Ordinance sets much stricter noise limits on departures from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. (8 a.m. on Sundays), which keeps most jets on the ground overnight.Sources: files.ocair.com, newportbeachca.gov

  • LGB

    Long Beach International Airport

Runway 10,000 ft · control tower · 17 mi from downtown, straight line

Suits: By runway length: every jet size, large-cabin included.

Long Beach applies a noise ordinance with hourly noise limits that are tighter late at night. Private flights may operate overnight as long as they stay within those limits.Source: longbeach.gov

  • CMA

    Camarillo Airport

Runway 6,013 ft · control tower · no airline service · 50 mi from downtown, straight line

Suits: By runway length: light to super-midsize jets; large-cabin jets depending on weight and weather.

Camarillo, in Ventura County, has no scheduled airline service. Its voluntary noise procedures ask that departures between midnight and 5 a.m. get prior permission from the airport director.Source: airports.venturacounty.gov

In our order of preference for a private flight; routes on this page are priced from VNY. The airport changes the price, so ask about each. Each airport's page has its runways, customs and which jets fit. “Suits” is our rule of thumb from runway length and elevation: weight, temperature and the jet's own numbers decide it on the day.

When to go

Demand runs year-round. It builds around awards season in winter and early spring and around big sports weekends. There is no true off-season. Late summer can be lighter for entertainment-industry travel.

Good to know before you book

  • If you need a late departure, check the noise rules first. VNY limits louder jets after 10 p.m., and SNA's nighttime limits run from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. (8 a.m. Sundays).
  • Burbank's 10 p.m. curfew is voluntary and applies to scheduled airlines, not private flights.

Picks from the numbers

Each card says how it was chosen. Estimates are one way, on the jet size each trip calls for.

Cost against time

Every route from Los Angeles, by cost and flight time

The bill is roughly hours times the rate, so cost climbs with time, and steps up where a trip needs a bigger jet. Minimums make the shortest hops cost more than their flight time.

The gold line is CRAFT's super-midsize card at $12,950/hr (fuel and FET included), billed at least 2 hours a day: compare it with the super-midsize dots, not with smaller jets.

Range

How far a private jet flies nonstop from Los Angeles

Practical ranges we assume: light 1,700 nm, midsize 2,000, super-midsize 3,000, large 4,000. Conservative on purpose; payload, winds and runway length decide it on the day.

Every private jet route from and to Los Angeles

One-way estimates by jet size, grouped by region, nearest first. Flight time is for the jet size each trip usually calls for; “nonstop in” is the smallest size that makes it without a stop; the clock is the time difference at the other end.

About $6,000 to $8,000 one way to Las Vegas on a light jet; $18,000 to $23,000 one way to Los Cabos on a light jet; $63,000 to $68,000 one way to New York on a super-midsize jet. Across all 211 destinations we price from Los Angeles, one-way estimates run from about $4,000 (Bakersfield) to $131,000 (Trinidad). These are estimates from published jet card rates times the flight time, not quotes: minimums, peak days and airport fees change the final price.

How much is a 2-hour private jet flight from Los Angeles?

About $15,000 to $19,000 in a light jet, $19,000 to $21,000 in a midsize jet, $24,000 to $26,000 in a super-midsize jet, $29,000 to $33,000 in a large jet: two hours times the published hourly rates, before minimums. About two hours from Los Angeles: Aspen, Jackson Hole and Denver.

How much is a private jet from LA to Vegas?

How much is a private jet from LA to New York?

About $63,000 to $68,000 one way on a super-midsize jet, 5 hours 15 minutes nonstop for 2,450 miles. A round trip on different days is about twice that. An estimate from published rates, not a quote.

Where do private jets fly from in Los Angeles?

We price Los Angeles from VNY (Van Nuys Airport), then LAX (Los Angeles International Airport), BUR (Hollywood Burbank/Bob Hope Airport), SNA (John Wayne Orange County International Airport), LGB (Long Beach International Airport) and CMA (Camarillo Airport), in our order of preference for a private flight. The airport changes the price and the drive, so ask about each when you book.

How far can a private jet fly nonstop from Los Angeles?

By our conservative range assumptions, a light jet (about 1,700 nautical miles) reaches 101 of 211 destinations, the farthest being Atlanta; a midsize jet (about 2,000 nautical miles) reaches 140 of 211 destinations, the farthest being Richmond; a super-midsize jet (about 3,000 nautical miles) reaches 199 of 211 destinations, the farthest being Curaçao; a large jet (about 4,000 nautical miles) reaches 211 of 211 destinations, the farthest being Barbados. Beyond that, plan a fuel stop. Payload, winds and runway length decide it on the day.

What's the lowest-cost way to fly private from Los Angeles?

Fly the smallest jet that makes the trip nonstop (a light jet covers 101 of these routes), avoid peak days, and compare one-way pricing with a round trip. A jet card fixes the hourly rate ahead of time; compare cards within one jet size. For a super-midsize jet, CRAFT's is $12,950 an hour on the 25-hour card, fuel and FET included, on a Challenger 350. Empty legs and shared flights exist, but they run on someone else's schedule. No estimate here is a guaranteed price.

Can I fly private from Los Angeles to Mexico or the Caribbean?

Yes. 64 of the routes on this page cross a border, including Los Cabos (2h 20m, nonstop in a light jet), Nassau (5h 25m, nonstop in a super-midsize jet) and Tortola (7h 00m, nonstop in a large jet). An international flight clears customs at an airport of entry and everyone needs a passport. CRAFT's card rate covers the lower 48; Caribbean, Mexico and Canada trips add repositioning at $4,000 an hour plus handling.

Which Los Angeles airport do most private jets use?

Van Nuys (VNY) is a dedicated general aviation airport with four major FBOs and no airline service. Burbank, Long Beach, John Wayne and Camarillo are other options, depending on where you are going.

Can a private jet depart Los Angeles late at night?

It depends on the airport and the aircraft. VNY limits louder departures from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., with quieter Stage 3 jets restricted from 11 p.m. John Wayne's nighttime noise limits keep most jets from departing between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. (8 a.m. Sundays).

Does Burbank have a curfew for private jets?

No. Burbank's voluntary 10 p.m. to 6:59 a.m. curfew covers scheduled airlines. It does not cover private flights.
