The Mach scale
How close to the speed of sound they fly
The shaded band is every business jet in this ranking, Mach 0.80 to 0.95: just under the speed of sound, a hair above airliners and about half as fast as Concorde. In flight testing the Global 8000 reached Mach 1.015, the first supersonic flight by a business jet (Bombardier).

Time at top speed in still air, with no climb or descent; real flights also meet winds and usually cruise slower to save fuel. Striped bars: the trip is longer than the jet's published range, so it would stop for fuel.

The fastest private jets fly faster than any airliner in service. The Bombardier Global 8000 tops the list with a maximum operating speed of Mach 0.95, and the Gulfstream G700 and G800 follow at Mach 0.935, about 615 to 625 mph at cruising altitude. Airliners cruise at around Mach 0.85.
The fastest private jets, ranked
Ranked by maximum operating speed (Mmo), the highest Mach number the jet is certified to fly. In practice these jets cruise slower, usually at Mach 0.85 to 0.90, to stretch their range. The ranked table above sorts and filters the full list.
Maximum operating speeds and ranges are the manufacturers' published figures. Miles per hour convert Mach at 573 knots, the speed of sound above about 36,000 feet (NASA), rounded to the nearest 5 mph. Two jets in development are not ranked: Dassault's Falcon 10X (Mach 0.925 announced) and Gulfstream's G400 (Mach 0.90, preliminary).
1. Bombardier Global 8000: Mach 0.95
Bombardier's Global 8000, certified by Transport Canada in November 2025 and in service since that December, is the fastest business jet in service, with a maximum operating speed of Mach 0.95. In flight testing it repeatedly flew faster than the speed of sound, reaching Mach 1.015, which Bombardier describes as the first supersonic flight by a business jet. It flies 8,000 nautical miles and keeps a cabin altitude of 2,691 feet at 41,000 feet. It is a development of the Global 7500.
2. Gulfstream G700 and G800: Mach 0.935
The G700 is Gulfstream's largest jet and the G800 its longest-range; both reach Mach 0.935. Gulfstream gives the G700 a range of 7,750 nautical miles at Mach 0.85 and 6,650 at Mach 0.90, a good illustration of what speed costs in fuel. The G700 is among the most expensive private jets and among the costliest to operate in our league table.
3. Bombardier Global 7500 and Gulfstream G500, G600: Mach 0.925
The Global 7500, which entered service in 2018 with the longest range of any business jet at the time, reaches Mach 0.925, as do Gulfstream's G500 and G600. All three cruise economically at Mach 0.85 and can sprint at Mach 0.90 when time matters more than fuel.
The fastest jet in each size class
Speed rises with size, so the fastest small jets are well behind the leaders. The fastest current model in each class, by its manufacturer's published figure:
| Class | Fastest current model | Top speed |
|---|---|---|
| Ultra-long-range | Bombardier Global 8000 | Mach 0.95 |
| Large | Dassault Falcon 2000LXS | Mach 0.86 |
| Super-midsize | Bombardier Challenger 3500 | Mach 0.83 |
| Super-midsize | Cessna Citation Longitude | 483 kt max cruise |
| Midsize | Cessna Citation Latitude | 446 kt max cruise |
| Light | Cessna Citation CJ4 Gen3 | 451 kt max cruise |
| Light | Embraer Phenom 300EV | Mach 0.80 |
| Very light | HondaJet Elite II | 422 kt max cruise |
Cessna and Honda publish a maximum cruise speed in knots rather than a maximum Mach. At altitude, 483 knots is about 556 mph; 451 knots about 519 mph; 422 knots about 486 mph.
The fastest private jets of the past
Two out-of-production jets still come up in any list of the fastest:
- Concorde was never a private jet, but it remains the fastest civil aircraft to carry paying passengers: twice the speed of sound, about 1,350 mph, until 2003.
- Cessna Citation X and X+: for years the fastest business jets in the world, with a maximum operating speed of Mach 0.935. Production ended in 2018, and many still fly; see the Citation X+ operating costs.
Does speed matter?
For most trips, less than you'd think. Between Mach 0.80 and Mach 0.90 the difference is about 65 mph: roughly 10 minutes on a two-hour domestic flight. On a 12-hour intercontinental flight, it is more than an hour. Flying faster also burns noticeably more fuel per mile, so most operators fly the fastest jets at their long-range cruise speed unless a passenger asks otherwise.
What a private jet saves on a short trip is mostly on the ground: no terminal, no security lines and airports closer to home. How fast planes fly compares airliners and private jets at every phase of flight.

Frequently asked questions
What is the fastest private jet in the world?
The Bombardier Global 8000, which entered service in December 2025, has a maximum operating speed of Mach 0.95, about 625 mph at altitude. Bombardier calls it the world's fastest business jet, and no business jet in service has a higher published maximum speed.
How fast is the Gulfstream G700?
Gulfstream gives the G700 and the G800 a maximum operating speed of Mach 0.935, about 615 mph at altitude. At Mach 0.90 the G700 flies 6,650 nautical miles; at Mach 0.85, 7,750.
What is the fastest light jet?
Among current light jets, the Cessna Citation CJ4 Gen3 has a published maximum cruise of 451 knots and the Embraer Phenom 300EV reaches Mach 0.80. Among the smallest jets, the HondaJet Elite II is the fastest at 422 knots.
Is a faster private jet worth it?
On short trips, rarely: the difference between Mach 0.80 and Mach 0.90 is about 70 mph, or roughly 10 minutes on a two-hour flight. On long intercontinental flights the gap grows to an hour or more, which is where the fastest jets earn their premium.
