Private jets fly from about 1,300 to 8,200 nautical miles nonstop (1,500 to 9,400 statute miles), depending on size. The smallest jets cover a trip like New York to Miami; the largest fly New York to Hong Kong or Los Angeles to Sydney without stopping. Airliners range from about 3,400 nautical miles for a narrow-body to 9,000 and more for the longest-range wide-bodies.

Distances are great-circle distances between the main airports. Real flights add routing, and the practical range is shorter than the published one, so treat the right-hand column as the edge of each class's reach rather than a guarantee.

How far can a private jet fly?

  • Very light jets (Cirrus Vision Jet, Citation M2) fly about 1,275 to 1,550 nautical miles: regional trips such as New York to Miami or Chicago to Denver.
  • Light jets (Citation CJ4, Phenom 300, Pilatus PC-24) fly about 2,000 to 2,200 nautical miles, enough to cross most of the U.S., though a full cabin flying west into the wind usually needs a fuel stop.
  • Midsize and super-midsize jets (Citation Latitude, Challenger 3500, Citation Longitude, Praetor 600E) fly about 2,700 to 4,000 nautical miles: coast to coast with margin, and the shorter Atlantic crossings.
  • Ultra-long-range jets (Falcon 6X and 8X, Global 7500 and 8000, Gulfstream G700 and G800) fly 5,500 to 8,200 nautical miles, linking almost any two major cities. The longest-range private jets ranks them.

For a specific route, the private jet cost pages show which jet sizes fly it nonstop and what each costs; for example, New York to Miami.

How far can a commercial plane fly?

Narrow-body airliners, the 737 and A320 families, fly about 3,400 to 3,500 nautical miles (Boeing gives the 737-8 up to 3,500; Airbus the A320neo 3,400), enough for transcontinental flights and the shorter Atlantic crossings. Long-haul wide-bodies fly much farther: Airbus gives the A350-1000 a range of 9,100 nautical miles, and the world's longest airline routes, such as Singapore to New York, use specially configured versions of these jets.

Airliners carry far more weight, but they also carry far more fuel. A business jet's advantage is that it carries a handful of passengers in an aircraft built around range, so the largest business jets now match or beat many airliners nonstop.

Why the published range is a best case

Manufacturers publish range under set conditions: a stated number of passengers, a still-air flight, a long-range cruise speed and fuel reserves on landing (NBAA instrument flight rules reserves for most business jets). Real flights differ:

  • Wind. A 100-knot headwind for seven hours costs 700 nautical miles. Westbound transatlantic flights against the jet stream are the classic case.
  • Payload. Every passenger and bag adds weight; full cabins cut range on smaller jets especially.
  • Speed. Flying faster burns more fuel per mile. Gulfstream gives the G700 7,750 nautical miles at Mach 0.85 but 6,650 at Mach 0.90.
  • Runways and temperature. Short runways and hot, high airports may force a lighter takeoff with less fuel.
  • Reserves and alternates. Bad weather at the destination means carrying fuel to fly to an alternate airport.

That is why charter operators plan with a practical range shorter than the brochure number, and why a trip near a jet's limit may need a fuel stop.

Frequently asked questions

How far can a private jet fly?

It depends on the size. Very light jets fly about 1,200 to 1,600 nautical miles nonstop, light jets 2,000 to 2,200, midsize and super-midsize jets 2,700 to 4,000, and ultra-long-range jets 5,500 to 8,200. The Gulfstream G800 has the longest published range of any business jet in service, 8,200 nautical miles.

Can a private jet fly across the Atlantic?

Yes. New York to London is about 3,000 nautical miles, within the published range of super-midsize jets such as the Challenger 3500 (3,400 nautical miles) and every large jet. In practice winds, passengers and reserves decide whether a smaller jet makes it nonstop, especially westbound into the jet stream.

How far can a commercial plane fly?

Narrow-body airliners such as the Boeing 737-8 and Airbus A320neo fly about 3,400 to 3,500 nautical miles. Long-haul wide-bodies fly much farther: Airbus gives the A350-1000 a range of 9,100 nautical miles.

How far can a small private plane fly?

The single-engine Cirrus Vision Jet flies about 1,275 nautical miles, and the Citation M2 Gen3 about 1,550, enough for New York to Miami (about 950 nautical miles) with room to spare. Piston planes generally fly less far.

Why is real range shorter than the published figure?

Published ranges assume a set number of passengers, a still-air flight and fuel reserves at the end. Headwinds, full cabins, hot weather and the need to carry fuel to an alternate airport all cut the practical range, typically by 10% to 20%.
