Fractional Ownership

Fractional ownership involves buying a portion of a plane, typically starting at 1/16th increments, which provides approximately 50 flight hours per year. Agreements typically last five years, after which you can sell your share or renew. Even though you buy into a particular plane, most services will send you a comparable cabin class to reduce lead time.

Fractional ownership provides equity and a higher level of access than jet cards. The trade-off: the upfront price is higher, and the money you put in will lose value as the aircraft depreciates by 40–50% over a five-year period.

First-class tickets are typically the most affordable option in isolation. There are exceptions, most found in the empty leg category. If you find a good deal on an empty leg flight and fill it with six to eight passengers, you very well might pay less per person than first-class tickets at peak pricing.

In all other cases, you’ll spend at least a little more on private travel, and sometimes dramatically more. But cost alone doesn’t capture what motivates people to fly privately. It’s the convenience. Those nine hours spent getting to the airport, going through security, waiting, boarding, and collecting baggage could be better spent enjoying life, earning money, or being productive. Many private travelers see the logistical benefits, not the price, as the primary motivating factor.
