Flying private to Vail: airports, seasons and events

Most private flights to Vail and Beaver Creek land at Eagle County (EGE) in Gypsum, about 30 miles west of Vail, which takes larger aircraft and has customs. Aspen (ASE) is the other option, but it limits wingspan to 95 ft and closes overnight.

Private jet airports near Vail

  • EGE

    Eagle County Regional Airport

    Runway 9,000 ft · elevation 6,547 ft · control tower · U.S. Customs (user-fee airport) · 29 mi from downtown, straight line

Suits: By runway length: every jet size, large-cabin included. High field: heat and altitude cut takeoff weight, so bigger jets may carry less fuel on warm days.

Eagle County Regional is about 30 miles west of Vail, with a drive of roughly 40 to 45 minutes depending on weather and traffic. Customs is available Thursday through Monday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with after-hours service on three hours' notice; the tower is seasonal, and night operations are discouraged for pilots unfamiliar with the mountain terrain.Sources: discovervail.com, airnav.com

  • ASE

    Aspen-Pitkin County Airport (Sardy Field)

Runway 8,006 ft · elevation 7,838 ft · control tower · 39 mi from downtown, straight line

Suits: By runway length: every jet size, large-cabin included. High field: heat and altitude cut takeoff weight, so bigger jets may carry less fuel on warm days.

Aspen-Pitkin County is a high-altitude mountain airport, closed from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. under a curfew that predates federal noise law, with a 95 ft maximum wingspan. Mountain flying there is not recommended unless ceilings and visibility are high.Sources: airnav.com, aspenairport.com

In our order of preference for a private flight; routes on this page are priced from EGE. The airport changes the price, so ask about each. Each airport's page has its runways, customs and which jets fit. “Suits” is our rule of thumb from runway length and elevation: weight, temperature and the jet's own numbers decide it on the day.

When to go

Ski season, from mid-November openings at Vail Mountain and late November at Beaver Creek through early spring, with holiday weeks the busiest. Winter weather can cause delays during peak holiday travel. Late April through May and the late fall shoulder season are quieter.Sources: vaildaily.com, discovervail.com

Good to know before you book

  • EGE customs keeps regular hours Thursday through Monday; arrange after-hours clearance at least three hours ahead.
  • If you route to Aspen instead, check the aircraft's wingspan against ASE's 95 ft limit and plan around the 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. closure.

Cost against time

Every route into Vail, by cost and flight time

The bill is roughly hours times the rate, so cost climbs with time, and steps up where a trip needs a bigger jet. Minimums make the shortest hops cost more than their flight time.

Flying private to Vail: questions

How much is a private jet to Vail?

About $6,500 to $8,000 one way from Park City on a light jet; $15,000 to $19,000 one way from Los Angeles on a light jet; $36,000 to $41,000 one way from New York on a midsize jet. Across all 210 cities we price into Vail, one-way estimates run from about $4,000 (Denver) to $114,000 (Barbados). These are estimates from published jet card rates times the flight time, not quotes: minimums, peak days and airport fees change the final price.

How much is a 2-hour private jet flight to Vail?

About $15,000 to $19,000 in a light jet, $19,000 to $21,000 in a midsize jet, $24,000 to $26,000 in a super-midsize jet, $29,000 to $33,000 in a large jet: two hours times the published hourly rates, before minimums. About two hours from Vail: Los Angeles, Dallas and Orange County.

How much is a private jet from New York to Vail?

About $36,000 to $41,000 one way on a midsize jet, 3 hours 50 minutes nonstop for 1,725 miles. A round trip on different days is about twice that. An estimate from published rates, not a quote.

How much is a private jet from Park City to Vail?

About $6,500 to $8,000 one way on a light jet, 50 minutes nonstop for 245 miles. A round trip on different days is about twice that. An estimate from published rates, not a quote.

Where do private jets land in Vail?

We price Vail from EGE (Eagle County Regional Airport), then ASE (Aspen-Pitkin County Airport (Sardy Field)), in our order of preference for a private flight. The airport changes the price and the drive, so ask about each when you book.

Which private jets can fly to Vail nonstop?

By our conservative range assumptions, a light jet (about 1,700 nautical miles) flies in nonstop from 165 of 210 cities, the farthest being Abaco; a midsize jet (about 2,000 nautical miles) flies in nonstop from 176 of 210 cities, the farthest being Managua; a super-midsize jet (about 3,000 nautical miles) flies in nonstop from 210 of 210 cities, the farthest being Trinidad; a large jet (about 4,000 nautical miles) flies in nonstop from 210 of 210 cities, the farthest being Trinidad. Beyond that, plan a fuel stop. Payload, winds and runway length decide it on the day.

What's the lowest-cost way to fly private to Vail?

Fly the smallest jet that makes the trip nonstop (a light jet covers 165 of these routes), avoid peak days, and compare one-way pricing with a round trip. A jet card fixes the hourly rate ahead of time; compare cards within one jet size. For a super-midsize jet, CRAFT's is $12,950 an hour on the 25-hour card, fuel and FET included, on a Challenger 350. Empty legs and shared flights exist, but they run on someone else's schedule. No estimate here is a guaranteed price.

Can I fly private to Vail from Mexico, Canada or the Caribbean?

Yes. 64 of the routes on this page cross a border, including Los Cabos (2h 40m, nonstop in a light jet), Nassau (4h 25m, nonstop in a midsize jet) and Tortola (6h 10m, nonstop in a super-midsize jet). An international flight clears customs at an airport of entry and everyone needs a passport. CRAFT's card rate covers the lower 48; Caribbean, Mexico and Canada trips add repositioning at $4,000 an hour plus handling.

What is the closest airport to Vail for a private jet?

Eagle County Regional (EGE), about 30 miles west of Vail. The drive takes roughly 40 to 45 minutes depending on weather and traffic.

Can I clear customs flying private into Vail?

Yes, at EGE. Customs keeps regular hours Thursday through Monday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and offers after-hours service with three hours' notice.

Can I use Aspen airport for a Vail trip?

ASE is an option, but it closes from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. and limits wingspan to 95 ft.
