Mexico City for private flyers: airports, seasons and events

General aviation has been barred from Mexico City International (MEX) since 1994, so private flights to the capital normally use Toluca (TLC), the primary executive and general aviation airport for the Greater Mexico City area. Toluca is a high-altitude airport, which imposes payload restrictions on departing aircraft. Flights from the U.S. also need Mexican entry authorization from AFAC.

Runway 13,780 ft · elevation 8,466 ft · 29 mi from downtown, straight line

Suits: By runway length: every jet size, large-cabin included. High field: heat and altitude cut takeoff weight, so bigger jets may carry less fuel on warm days.

Toluca International is the main airport for executive and general aviation in the Greater Mexico City airspace. Its high elevation imposes payload restrictions, offset by one of Mexico's longest runways.Source: en.wikipedia.org

  • MEX

Runway 12,966 ft · elevation 7,316 ft · 4 mi from downtown, straight line

Suits: By runway length: every jet size, large-cabin included. High field: heat and altitude cut takeoff weight, so bigger jets may carry less fuel on warm days.

Mexico City International has prohibited general aviation since 1994, allowing only military, government, commercial and authorized flights. Its airspace has been declared saturated, with operations capped at 61 per hour.Source: en.wikipedia.org

In our order of preference for a private flight; routes on this page are priced from TLC. The airport changes the price, so ask about each. Each airport's page has its runways, customs and which jets fit. “Suits” is our rule of thumb from runway length and elevation: weight, temperature and the jet's own numbers decide it on the day.

Good to know before you book

  • Mexico's AFAC requires prior authorization from its Mexico City office for private and charter flights, based on an 11-document package, and has warned of response delays of more than two hours. U.S. operators must also file eAPIS at least one hour before departure.

Picks from the numbers

Each card says how it was chosen. Estimates are one way, on the jet size each trip calls for.

Cost against time

Every route from Mexico City, by cost and flight time

The bill is roughly hours times the rate, so cost climbs with time, and steps up where a trip needs a bigger jet. Minimums make the shortest hops cost more than their flight time.

One-way estimates for 213 routes from Mexico City. Each dot is the middle of a route's range on the jet size it calls for. The gold line is CRAFT's super-midsize card at $12,950/hr (fuel and FET included), billed at least 2 hours a day: compare it with the super-midsize dots, not with smaller jets.

What else moves the bill (tax, minimums, peak days, repositioning) is on every route page under What the number leaves out.

Range

How far a private jet flies nonstop from Mexico City

Practical ranges we assume: light 1,700 nm, midsize 2,000, super-midsize 3,000, large 4,000. Conservative on purpose; payload, winds and runway length decide it on the day.

Every private jet route from and to Mexico City

One-way estimates by jet size, grouped by region, nearest first. Flight time is for the jet size each trip usually calls for; “nonstop in” is the smallest size that makes it without a stop; the clock is the time difference at the other end.

CRAFT Fleet Jet Card

What 25 card hours buy from Mexico City

The 25-hour CRAFT Fleet Jet Card is $323,750 at $12,950 an hour, fuel and FET included, on a Challenger 300 or 350. It bills flight time plus 12 minutes of taxi a leg, at least 2 hours a day, with no per-leg minimum.

No ferry or repositioning fees anywhere in the lower 48. The Caribbean, Mexico and Canada add repositioning at $4,000 an hour plus handling; Hawaii and Alaska are quoted per trip.

Round trips here fly out and back on different days, each day with its own minimum. Peak days and short-notice callout cost more.

Mexico City private jet charter: questions

How much does a private jet from Mexico City cost?

About $5,500 to $6,500 one way to Acapulco on a light jet; $14,000 to $18,000 one way to Los Cabos on a light jet; $32,500 to $37,000 one way to Los Angeles on a midsize jet. Across all 213 destinations we price from Mexico City, one-way estimates run from about $4,000 (Querétaro) to $127,000 (Fairbanks). These are estimates from published jet card rates times the flight time, not quotes: minimums, peak days and airport fees change the final price.

How much is a 2-hour private jet flight from Mexico City?

About $15,000 to $19,000 in a light jet, $19,000 to $21,000 in a midsize jet, $24,000 to $26,000 in a super-midsize jet, $29,000 to $33,000 in a large jet: two hours times the published hourly rates, before minimums. About two hours from Mexico City: Houston, Los Cabos and Austin.

How much is a private jet from Mexico City to Las Vegas?

About $31,500 to $36,000 one way on a midsize jet, 3 hours 25 minutes nonstop for 1,495 miles. A round trip on different days is about twice that. An estimate from published rates, not a quote.

How much is a private jet from Mexico City to Los Cabos?

About $14,000 to $18,000 one way on a light jet, 1 hour 50 minutes nonstop for 705 miles. A round trip on different days is about twice that. An estimate from published rates, not a quote.

Where do private jets fly from in Mexico City?

We price Mexico City from TLC (Adolfo López Mateos International Airport), then MEX (Mexico City Benito Juárez International Airport), in our order of preference for a private flight. The airport changes the price and the drive, so ask about each when you book.

How far can a private jet fly nonstop from Mexico City?

By our conservative range assumptions, a light jet (about 1,700 nautical miles) reaches 149 of 213 destinations, the farthest being Santo Domingo; a midsize jet (about 2,000 nautical miles) reaches 180 of 213 destinations, the farthest being Nantucket; a super-midsize jet (about 3,000 nautical miles) reaches 206 of 213 destinations, the farthest being Juneau; a large jet (about 4,000 nautical miles) reaches 213 of 213 destinations, the farthest being Kauai. Beyond that, plan a fuel stop. Payload, winds and runway length decide it on the day.

What's the lowest-cost way to fly private from Mexico City?

Fly the smallest jet that makes the trip nonstop (a light jet covers 149 of these routes), avoid peak days, and compare one-way pricing with a round trip. A jet card fixes the hourly rate ahead of time; compare cards within one jet size. For a super-midsize jet, CRAFT's is $12,950 an hour on the 25-hour card, fuel and FET included, on a Challenger 350. Empty legs and shared flights exist, but they run on someone else's schedule. No estimate here is a guaranteed price.

Can a private jet land at Mexico City International (MEX)?

Generally no. General aviation was moved out of MEX in 1994, and the airport allows only military, government, commercial and authorized flights. Private flights use Toluca (TLC).

Does Toluca's altitude affect private flights?

Yes. Toluca is a high-altitude airport, which imposes payload restrictions on departing aircraft. Its long runway offsets part of that, and the operator plans fuel and passenger load around it.
