With over 150 different models of private jets, what are the most unique and quirky planes out there?
Generally speaking, aircraft that are designed for commercial use focus on efficiency, safety, and function.
This gets the job done, but leaves a bit to be desired.
On the other hand, privately owned jets have a bit more flexibility for unique and interesting designs— some for aesthetic reasons, and other designs for more unusual function.
HondaJet
One of the unique jets that can be privately chartered is the HondaJet
It has a different design with over wing engines. This is when the engines are attached to the tops of the wings themselves.
By contrast, most other private jet aircraft are typically designed for the engines to have a rear fuselage mount configuration.
In fact, the HondaJet was the very first business jet in the world with this over wing engine design.
You may be wondering what the benefits are for the HondaJet’s over wing design. After all, usually we do not want to place anything on the wings of a plane that could interrupt the airflow.
Placing the engines on top of the wings can help to increase flight speed and fuel efficiency.
Shockwaves are created by airflow on top of the plane’s wings and create aerodynamic drag. However, with the engine location on the HondaJet, the airflow is reduced.
This decreases the size of shockwaves and therefore decreases the aerodynamic drag.
Overwing engines on the HondaJet also decrease the noise and vibrations that make their way into the cabin. This is attributed to them being detached from the fuselage.
Due to its design, the HondaJet is a unique jet known for a quiet, comfortable cabin and fuel efficiency while in the air.
Piaggio 180
The Piaggio 180 is among these quirky planes because it has wing mounted engines like the HondaJet does.
In addition to this, it has a spacious cabin and is considered to be more fuel efficient.
In fact, the Piaggio 180 is estimated to be 20% more fuel efficient than comparable jets. It has less drag and can also exceed the average high speed cruise distance of equivalent planes.
The interior of the Piaggio 180 is classic Italian luxury.
It typically seats seven passengers, with a two seat divan and additional single seat at the front of the plane, with the remaining four single seats arranged in the club formation at the back of the aircraft.
In addition to the layout, the interior has features like subtle LED lights located overhead and a custom designed silk carpet. The seat cushions are Spinneyback Espana leather.
Eclipse 500
Another quirky plane with some unique characteristics is the Eclipse 500.
Given how small the aircraft is it results in a lack of toilet on board the aircraft.
The Eclipse 500 is one of the smallest private jets on the market, and as there is no toilet onboard, it has no running water or sink, either.
This is because of the size of the jet— there is simply not enough room to put in a lavatory area.
However, the size of the Eclipse 500 can be an advantage in certain situations as well. As it is small and has the quirk of lacking a toilet, it can be a more cost effective choice.
It is a taxi style jet that is designed for quick flights over short distances. After all, you won’t be able to travel too far without the option of the lavatory.
Leaving out the toilet on this unique jet allows for more room in the small cabin for passengers, as well as cutting down on costs as mentioned above.
The Eclipse 500 still has plenty of comfortable amenities for passengers. These include 26 cubic feet of baggage space as well as power outlets, sound proofing, and air conditioning.
Cirrus Vision Jet
Similar to the Eclipse 500, without a toilet onboard, is the Cirrus Vision Jet. For this reason, it is only used for journeys across shorter distances.
Like the HondaJet, another of its big quirk lies with the engine.
Specifically, the Cirrus Vision Jet only has one engine mounted on the top of the aircraft.
The Cirrus Vision Jet belongs to the very light jet, or VLJ, category of private jet.
They are small, light private jets that are best suited for shorter journeys. They are often more fuel efficient than larger or heavier jets as well.
This particular plane is powered by a single turbofan engine, and is made from composite material.
The Cirrus Vision Jet is largely considered to be one of the least expensive jet options currently on the market, especially when you consider factors like its fuel efficiency.
Pilatus PC-24
Next in our list of quirky planes is the Pilatus PC-24.
It is a light business jet that is manufactured in Switzerland.
The Pilatus PC-24 is considered a unique and quirky plane because it is able to land on dirt and grass, rather than being restricted to tarmac.
Not only was it designed to provide this flexibility and increased performance, but the Pilatus PC-24 was designed to improve the experience of its passengers as well.
These improvements are linked. By improving the landing capabilities of the unique jet, the passenger experience can be increased, too.
Allowing the plane to land on grass and dirt can open up options for departure and arrival airports.
This can allow the aircraft to land at smaller airports that are closer to where you want to arrive or leave from— therefore decreasing the amount of time spent traveling to and fro.

Embraer Lineage 1000
Finally, in this list of quirky planes, we come to the Lineage 1000.
The Lineage 1000 is on this list as it is actually a converted airliner. It is an ultra large business jet and has the capacity to seat 19 passengers, if needed.
This is a large option for a private jet, as many private charters cannot carry this many passengers.
The Lineage 1000 has a larger fuselage cross section than other comparably priced aircraft.
Its cabin interior has perks such as fie different sections that include an optional bedroom, as well as a bathroom that has running water. The unique jet even has a walk-in cargo section located in the rear.
As the Lineage 1000 is a larger private jet option, it is comfortable for long range flights.
